Management of the Lagos State University Ojo has revealed its plan to begin running of fresh degree programmes by the next academic session in the newly established Faculty Of Computing, just as the university will be partnering University of Edinburgh in United Kingdom on a research project titled "Gender-Based Violence In Tertiary Institutions
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello who made this known recently during a press conference heralding the ongoing week long activities of the 28th Convocation of LASU, listed the departments in the new faculty offering degree programmes after accreditation by the National Universities Commission to include Departments of Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and that Software Engineering
"These departments will offer academic programmes leading to the award of various degrees"
"In LASU , we have continued to mobilize resources to strengthen our ICT Development, we established a 1 (one) petabyte tier 3 Data Centre capable of warehousing and providing data archiving and repository services for curated data items in Lagos State and beyond. I am so proud to state that this infrastructure will provide a solid support to Telecommunication industries ", she stated
The university according to her, recently expanded its ICT infrastructure with inauguration of a state-of-the-art 350-seat capacity Computer-Based Test Centre
On the partnership with University of Edinburgh, she revealed that the British Council approved the research project on the Gender-Based Violence In Tertiary Institutions, which entails developing a framework for Report and Support Channels for Policy and Practice
The Vice-Chancellor added that the Lagos State Government had commenced the construction of a two-storey technology hub to facilitate research and innovation in the university
She listed several key facilities completed and inaugurated in the last one year in LASU funded by TETFUND and individuals, to include new Faculty Of Arts Building, Academic Resource and Conference Centre , Faculty Building for new School of Tourism, 2,000 capacity seater Centre , 750 seat lecture theatre as well as Olatunji-Bello Auditorium and Faculty Buildings for Environmental Sciences both on Epe campus of the university amongst other notable projects
"At the commencement of the 2024/2025 Academic Session, the university also went fully residential with the opening of some of our hostel facilities for occupation by students. Some of the hostels were also used during the 11th All Africa University Games co-hosted by LASU and UNILAG"
"We also renovated and expanded our sporting facilities including the Sports Centre , office facilities amongst others", she stated
The activities for the ongoing 28th Convocation of LASU, commenced with pre-convocation events last Wednesday which featured Sports Competition among staff of the institution, a special Jumat Service was held at Central Mosque of the university on Ojo main campus while a Special Thanksgiving Service will hold on Sunday at the University Chapel of Light Ojo, Lagos at 10;00 am
On Monday 7th April, the convocation events will commence officially with the Coconut Breaking and Cultural Festival scheduled to take place at the Badagry Gate of the main campus at 9:00 am
The Convocation lecture titled Patriots Citizenship and National Ownership The Imperative of Collective Responsibility for Nigeria's Future will hold on Tuesday April 8 inside the Buba Marwa Auditorium on the Ojo main campus of the university at 11:00am
The Minister of Education, Dr. Ma'ruf Alausa Olatunji will be delivering the lecture under the Chairmanship of National Chairman of All Progressive Congress APC, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje
On Wednesday 9th of April, Diplomas , First Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Master's Degrees will be conferred upon deserving graduands at the Buba Marwa Auditorium Ojo at 10:00 am while grand finale of the ceremony holds on Thursday 10th of April with the award of Doctorate Degrees (Ph.D) as well as the conferment of distinguished Professorship and Honorary Doctorate Degrees will hold the same time at the same venue
A total of 8,711 students will be graduating with first degree programmes including 192 of them with First Class Honours led by Nwosu Isioma Sybil of Biochemistry Department emerging overall best graduating student with CGPA of 4.93 for the 2023/2024 Academic Session
