Experts Profer Strategies On How To Enhance Teaching In Classrooms

Experts in the teaching profession have identified proper counseling, acquaintance with standard ethics and professionalism, as well as growth-mindset, as some of the rudiments that can turnaround the pedagogical skills of teachers for the better performance in the classrooms

They identified these rudiments at the two-  day capacity building workshop for the newly-appointed Ogun Teach Interns, who are now permanent teachers in the State, with the theme, ‘’Reforming the Teaching Profession,” organised by the Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Speaking on a topic, ‘’Teachers as Role Models: Maintain High Standard of Ethics and Professionalism", a facilitator at the event, the Principal-General, Ijebu Division, Mr. Babatunji Yusuf, in his presentation, said teachers play a vital role in educating and guiding students, noting that a qualified teacher must possess moral attributes and display professionalism.

"Demonstration of positive behaviours, characters and habits will avail a teacher to be seen as a role model by students, which will go a long way to guide their conduct in schools and the society at large", he submitted.

Also speaking, his counterpart in Yewa Division, Mr. Taoheed Bankole, while making a presentation on the topic, "Identifying Common Characteristics of Weak and Brilliant Students for Academic Excellence", pointed out that teachers should establish cordial relationship with students, irrespective of their disabilities, in order to identify their potentials and areas of weakness, towards making them excel in their studies and in preparation for higher education.

Lending his voice, the Director, Administration and Supplies, Ogun State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Olusegun Akinfaye, who dwelled on "Teaching Service Reforms and Ethics", emphasised the need for the participants to be acquainted with Public Service Rules and Regulations, and other applicable documents on teaching ethics.

"I want you to know that the Teaching Service Commission is just a sector of the Public Service, dedicated to teachers' affairs. So, you must adhere to the stipulated Public Service guidelines and procedures, to properly guide your conducts’’, he said.

Other presentations were on ‘’Healthy Lifestyle’’, delivered by the Director of Nursing Services, Hospital Management Board, Mrs. Oluremi Mosuro, and words of admonition from the Best Teacher Global Award winner, Mr. Kayode Adewale, who encouraged the participants to be passionate about the teaching profession, have career objectives and reputable mentor.

Responding on behalf of other participants, from Salau Abiola Comprehensive High School, Osiele, and Community High School, Junior, Ibafo, Mr. Kabir Olasupo, and Miss Omolade Oso, respectively, expressed delight for the robust and interactive sections of the workshop, promising to utilise the knowledge gained to improve teaching for the development of education in the State
