Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hameed Benco-Ademola has re-assured the disappointed workers on the payroll of the Ogun State Government of getting salary reflecting the consequential adjustments across all grade levels from one to 17 very soon, blaming the non-implementation of the salary adjustments for the month of January as promised by government, on some teething problems being resolved
The State NLC Chairman who was reacting to the agitations of workers who were expecting the payment of the N77,000 minimum wage to reflect in their salaries for the month of January instead of the usual N42,000 across grade levels, gave the re-assurance in an interview with Edu-Biznews in Abeokuta, the State capital,as part of preparation for the marking of his two years of stewardship as labour leader later in March, 2025
He explained that the N42,000 addition to the salary was part of the components of minimum wage agreed since October 1,2024 which must be broken down to reflect all the variables in the consequential adjustments table such as utilities, basic salary, transportation, accommodations and others as agreed with government
Benco-Ademola said continuous payment of the N42,000 would amount to short-changing workers in future as regards their monthly pension and gratuities, if the consequential adjustments across all grade levels was not properly done
"If we continue to take the salary wage of N42,000 addition being paid, it will surely short-change us as workers in payment of our gratuities, it will reflect negatively in our monthly pensions . There are issues which need to be sorted out which delayed the implementation of the consequential adjustments for the month of January, but I want assure workers that very soon, they will be done and N42,000 will be factored into these variables of consequential adjustments", he clarified
The State NLC boss however reflected on the achievements of almost two years of his leadership, saying aside the already settled issue of new minimum, 40 percent perculiar allowances were paid to workers in all strata of government in the core-civil service, in addition to payment of N10,000 palliative by government to workers for nine months to cushion the effects of subsidy removal on the petrol which affected Nigerian economy
"We equally register our appreciation to Governor Dapo Abiodun on payment of premium of N500 monthly for every worker on the payroll of state government under the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme", he appreciated
Benco-Ademola who equally appreciated the support of members from all the 63 affiliates of NLC for the almost two years of his leadership, noted some of the achievements recorded so far in terms of projects to include provision of boreholes with the support of Ogun, Osun Rivers Basin Development Authority in Abeokuta and Avon Crowncap Nigeria Limited based in Ota Industrial zone of the State
The completion of the water projects according to him, will enable the union to go into car washing and water packaging businesses to further drive revenue earnings for NLC to run its affairs and maintain its Secretariat edifice located at commercial area of Abiola way in the city
The State NLC Chairman added that the Secretariat which used to be in darkness had been illuminated courtesy of Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu representing Ogun Central at the Nigerian Senate while inherited three buses that were in bad condition as at 2023, had been repaired and put back on the road for workers to enjoy the buses
"We've got new bus and a car for the office of Chairman from His Excellency while the inherited three buses in bad condition were repaired on put on the road again for the use of workers. We've repainted the entire complex of the State Secretariat, we are promising to have outdoor toilets facilities. We want to start construction of 18 lock up shops and looking for donors to take up these projects"
"All these are being initiated to further drive revenue of NLC. I must confess nothing is coming from anywhere, we are surviving on goodwill of those people who love , we are not getting running cost from government except for the celebration of May-Day (Workers day). I want to use this opportunity to seek for more support of Ogun State Government", he appealed
"We will continue to commend Governor Dapo Abiodun for the passionate attention given to organized labour at every point in time, the governor has been able to touch many lives, particularly workers retrenched and others who were offered permanent jobs in the public service. His Excellency has always been there for workers, looking into issues affecting workers
For workers who want to relax after the day's activities at work places, Comrade Benco-Ademola disclosed that Labour Games place had been formally commissioned for them at the Secretariat complex to play games such as Ayo, Ludo, Draft, Monopoly and the likes while enjoying their relaxation with soft drinks
