Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University,Oye-Ekiti in Ekiti State, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has attracted over one Billion Naira (N1000,000, 000) infrastructural projects to the University by encouraging robust partnership with host communities through the establishment of the lnstitute of Part Time Studies (IPTS) of the University.
It will be recalled that the institute was established in 2021 under the administration of Prof. Fasina, to provide alternative admission opportunities for the teeming population of admission seekers who yearly subscribe to the University.
Acting Director of the institute of Part Time Studies (IPTS), Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Associate Professor Omolade Adeleke disclosed this in an official bulletin of the university, obtained by Edu-Biznews
Dr. Adelele who became the Acting Director of institute when Prof. A A Ajiboye, the pioneer Director , was appointed Dean of the faculty of science in August, 2021, also said that the university has moved from 13 to the fourth most subscribed University in Nigeria according to thr ranking by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB)
“In the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by JAMB, more than 50,000 applicants picked FUOYE . Meanwhile, the quota we have for admission through UTME was less than ten thousand and the implications is that 40,00 students would not be able to gain admission into our University. This is why Prof Fasina felt that we could create an alternative avenue for students who are interested in coming to FUOYE by establishing the lPTS.
He explained that the university under the current leadership was able to attract an appreciable number of infrastructural projects through the institute
"Let me put it on record that Prof. Fasina has attracted infrastructural structures worth 1billion Naira through the institute to the University. We have a campus in Ayedun-Ekiti, it was renovated by Hon. Akin Rotimi. The partnership of the University with the community ensured that the campus remain one of our best now , with recreational facilities, CBT centre, houses, borehole, lecture halls , the campus alone worths over 500 million. In lre-Ekiti campus,l, all the facilities there are donated by the community. There is also a CBT centre at the lre campus donated by Aare Akomolafe Adebayo in 2023. It is worth over 150 million. It has 275 laptops. Its CBT centre is one of the best in the country and it has been accredited by JAMB . It was used for UTME last year and this year, it has been cleared for use for UTME. It is equipped with state of art facilities. Its well equipped public library donated by Chief Ajayi alone is worth N55 million Naira", he disclosed
The Acting Director of the institute of Part Time Studies equally recalled how the university secured the approval of National Universities Commission in 2021 to run
16 academic programmes and subsequent transformation of the institute
“We started in 2021 and we sought approval from NUC , we got approval for 16 academic programmes and admitted less than 2000 students. From that humble beginning , our student population is now above 6000. Ayegbaju-Ekiti was our first mini campus but now we are in four suburbs in Oye Local Government Area that aren’t too far away from one another as they surround our main campus in Oye-Ekiti.,” he said.
“Despite the paucity of funds, the institute has been leveraging on support from the host communities. From initial 16 academic programmes in 2021, we have 24 programmes now and all are approved by the NUC. We are running these programmes in a stable academic calendar
In terms of our staff, I want to tell you that lecturers teaching our students are also the same lecturers appointed on full time to teach the full or regular students. They are not from outside. In a case where we have lecturers from outside, they are less than 2% of the total number of our lecturers. There is also no difference in the teaching curriculum for our students compared to the full time students, only the duration varies in some of our programmes. We have also started using the CCMAS the way they have started it for the full time students. This is why we are reputed for academic excellence. This Directorate has been rated among the best in the University. God has been helping us with the support of our able Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Fasina. Our achievements are numerous. The purpose for having this institute is dual.. First is to generate IGR for the University and second is to maintain high and sound academic standard. We have to balance these two scales and ensure that one doesn’t adversely affect the other. As for offering standard and quality education, we have been scored high. NUC has assessed us two times and they were satisfied. I can tell you that there have been a number of times that our students in Part time have competed with their counterparts in full time and they have performed even better than those in full time. As for the IGR generation, currently, our institute remains the highest IGR generating unit of the University. The support that Prof. Fasina gives to the institute has enabled us to collaborate with host communities to develop education
