World Teachers Day: Ogun NUT Hails Transport Allowances For Teachers, Calls For Domestication Of New Retirement Age Act

Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has lauded Governor Dapo Abiodun for approving transport allowances for teachers in public primary and secondary schools as well as upward review of allowances for those in rural areas in Ogun State , to cushion the effect of hardship caused by the hike in the pump price of petrol in the country

Chairman of the State wing of NUT, Comrade Sewakanu Oladipupo Noah expressing the appreciation of teachers during the 2024 celebration of World Teachers' Day at the union's State Secretariat Hall in Kuto, Abeokuta, said the incentives announced by Governor Abiodun would go a long way to boost the morale and enhance the productivity of teachers in classrooms

On the union's call for domestication of the new Act on 65 years retirement age or 40 years period of service for teachers, Noah stressed the importance of implementing the new act in the state, so as to give the new teachers including those newly recruited under the OgunTeach Scheme in the past five years, more time to serve the people of the State, unlike the old act that the limited the retirement age to 60 years of age and put period of service at 35 years

The State NUT Chairman recalled that the immediate past administration of Senator Ibikunle Amosun did not recruit teachers for eight years of his tenure in office, creating a huge shortage of teachers in public schools

He added that union had met Governor Abiodun on it, expressing  confidence that the governor would act on it at appropriate time ,as far as age elongation is concern
