Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed concern over non-promotion of teachers in public primary schools in Ogun State beyond grade level 16, inspite of their university degree qualifications in the system
Chairman of the State wing of NUT, Comrade Sewakanu Oladipupo Noah who raised the concern during the celebration of this year's World Teachers' Day over the weekend in Abeokuta, also called on the State Government to address the inconsistencies noticed on the payment platform for salaries teachers, saying some of them are yet to receive their salaries for July while some are having issue with the payment for August salary
"Teachers In Primary School are not subservient to their colleagues in Secondary School or other Ministries. Having satisfied Public Service Rules (02702B) on waiting period for four years, and approval given through the office of His Excellency in April, 2019 on the consideration of University Degree Holders in Ogun State's Primary Schools for promotion beyond Grade Level 14. Our union is perturbed seeing the preparatory compiled promotion list for 2023/2024 that excluded promotable level 17 officers in SUBEB. Your Excellency, this request is aimed at ensuring equal opportunities for all Teachers, regardless of the level at which they impact knowledge to learners" the union stated
NUT also described as disheartening the pains of some of the teachers who are yet to receive their salaries for July or August,2024 as a result of some inconsistencies noticed on the payment platform
"Series of meetings had been held with Head of Service, Accountant General and concerned Permanent Secretaries to find a lasting solution. Kindly come to our aid , before people begin to label this Government", the union pleaded
The union advocated for payment of the backlog of eight years Leave Allowances between periods of 2015 and 2022
NUT stressed the need for Governor Dapo Abiodun to consider approval of the State Education Summit and ensure launching of education support scheme policy to raise fund to address the problem of infrastructure decay in public schools, which according to the union is worrisome
The Chairman who lauded the commitment of the Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration to the welfare of teachers in public schools, however urged the teachers to show compassion for their students, particularly during this challenging period of economic hardship.
"We must not transfer any frustration or discipline them in anger, therefore, managing our temper is crucial. You are aware that some of them might come to school with empty stomach and still testing our patience. We must not give in to to frustration as professionals that we are", the union cautioned
