NUT Still Waiting For Commencement Of School New Curriculum..Asks FG To Involve Teachers In Policies Formulation

Nigeria Union Of Teachers (NUT) says it is still waiting for the commencement of the new school curriculum expected to have started this October as announced by the Federal Government of Nigeria 

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman had last month said  that the reviewed new curriculum that would include technical/vocational education in both primary and secondary schools will commence this month in schools across the country, to enable primary and secondary schools to produce skills learners 

But the Ogun State Secretary of the State wing of NUT, Comrade Samson Oyelere in an interview with Edu-Biznews, said nothing had been put in place by government for the take off of the new curriculum in schools 

Oyelere who stressed the need for the involvement of teachers as one of the major stakeholders in the formulation of policies in the education sector, described  the new curriculum for schools as a mere statement by government until when the government demonstrated its readiness to begin to engage experts who will develop the new curriculum for schools and organize training for teachers to enable them implement the proposal new curriculum 

The union then commended the Federal Government on the proposed new curriculum for schools, saying the technical and vocational education , is a way to go, if Nigeria must be developed technologically 

NUT emphasized the importance of serious planning in the formulation and implementation of the new curriculum for schools 

"We need serious planning, there must proper training of teachers, the necessary equipments to be used must be in place, curriculum must be developed by experts who will also carry the teachers along in the development and implementation of the curriculum ", the union stated 

NUT however expressed concern over the poor implementation of the previous policy, particularly the 6334 system of education, during which technical workshops were constructed and equipped with needed equipments in secondary schools for those who want to continue with vocational and technical education after Junior Secondary School, but the facilities according to the union, are no more in existence in those schools
