Proprietor of Crescent University in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Prince Muhammed Adesegun Ajibola, SAN has joined the growing list of Nigerians calling for a review of act establishing Tertiary Education Trust Fund TETFUND to extend its support to private tertiary institutions which need various infrastructural projects Intervention to sustain qualitative tertiary education in the country
The Chairman of Board of Trustees made the call on Saturday during the university's 16th convocation ceremony where three distinguished individuals including Prince Yemisi Adedoyin Shyllon, along with Aare Onikoyi of Yorubaland, Tomori Williams and Mr. Kabir Gbemisola were conferred with honourary Degree of Doctor of Science in Business Administration respectively of the university as well as 479 students who graduated from various degree programmes and 47 others with Master's degree across all departments for the 2023/2024 academic session
Prince Ajibola who recalled that the similar call was made in the university on October 8, 2011 by the then Vice-President, Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo represented by the then Minister of State for Education and Mr. Nyesom Wike now FCT Minister, became necessary considering the increasing operational cost, particularly on provision of electricity in sustaining high standard of academic activities on the campus
"I'm impelled to add my voice to the call for amending the Act establishing the Tertiary Education Trust Fund TETFUND, allowing the agency to expand its scope and extend its services to private where developmental intervention are merited . After all, the private universities play important complimentary roles to the efforts of government in making tertiary education accessible to qualified candidates", he stated
The university according him, has full accreditation of all academic programmes of the institution by National Universities Commission and other regulatory bodies such as Council for Legal Education who recently increased the institution's admission quota for the Bola Ajibola College of Law, contrary to what he described as a fake story published by an online media that the council withdrew its accreditation because the institution exceeded quota allocated to it
He assured that the university would continue to provide the necessary infrastructure to deepen and enrich learning and research on campus while acknowledging the contributions of the honourary awardees including the E-Library and law books donated by Prince Yemisi Shyllon to the institution's College of Law
Similarly, the Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari commended Governing Council, Management, staff, students and the entire campus community for the 100 percent accreditation of academic programmes by NUC, while charging the fresh graduands to always be good ambassadors of the Institution, by contributing to its physical development
Also Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila equally dismissed the story of withdrawal of accreditation by the Council for Legal Education, saying the law programme along with other academic programmes full accreditation of both NUC and other regulatory bodies as reflected in the continuos increase in enrollment of qualified students, particularly in the recent matriculation ceremony where 508 full-time and 350 part-time students were admitted across various departments
"I'm pleased to report again that in the last round of accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) , of our programmes were presented and we scored 100%. All our programmes have accreditation status", he stated
"We are glad that this is the second time in a row that Crescent University has recorded the resounding success under the current leadership. Permit me to also hint this gathering that three of our Law students two of who are graduating today, also did the university proud at the vis-Moot Court Arbitration competition, at international Chamber of Commerce in Paris , France "
The Vice Chancellor also revealed that Nursing students of the university scored 100% in their first RN examination
Prof.Gbajabiamila however stressed the need for discipline, saying the university would not tolerate any form of abstinence, indecent dressings, amongst others anti-social vices saying a number students were punished by the Students Disciplinary Committee and Senate
"May I use this opportunity to call on parents and guardians to counsel their wards on the need to be law abiding and focus diligently on their studies while on campus. Let me also seize this opportunity to advise our students that the university's policy on zero tolerance for examimation malpractices, drug abuse, indecent dressings, cultism and other anti-social vices is still in force", he warned
The Vice-Chancellor then congratulated the graduands and urged them to imbibe the principles of integrity and moral excellence they acquired as students during their academic pursuits in the university, to inspire others in the larger society
He enjoined them to be part of alumni of the university who are doing very well as business entrepreneurs not job seekers
He gave the breakdown of the graduands to include 49 with first class degree honour , 197 bagged second class upper division honour ,173 with second class lower division as well as 54 who finished in the third class grade and remaining six with pass grade
Prizes were presented to outstanding graduating students of 2023/2024 set as well as conferment of honourary Degree of Doctor of Science in Business Administration on Prince Yemisi Shyllon and two others ,Aare Tomori Williams and Mr. Kabir Gbemisola in recognition of their respective contributions to the society
The Vice-Chancellor along with donor of E-Library project to the university's College of Law, Prince Yemisi Shyllon later commissioned the project with law practice books also donated to the library of the law college
Earlier the overall best graduating student , Daniel Oyeniyi with CGPA of 4.95 who became the first graduand to have emerged from the Mass Communication Department, charged each of the fellow graduands to develop the act of entrepreneurship, by being a job provider and not job seeker
