Rector of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta, the Ogun capital, Dr.Adeoye Odedeji has expressed concern over what he described as low interest of students in taking advantage of loan facility being provided by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund(NELFUND) to assist students studying in public tertiary institutions in the country
The Rector who was speaking on Friday during an inauguration of new members of the institution's Student Union Government, revealed that only 81 students out of the 11,000 students population whose data had been uploaded on the site of NELFUND, applied for the loan out of which just 26 were considered for the facility
He confirmed the payment of tuition fees of the 26 successful students by NELFUND to the polytechnic 's account, tasking new President of SUG, Comrade Idowu Prosper Oladele and his team to take up the challenge of encouraging more students to apply for the loan to assist them with the needed financial resources for educational pursuits in the school
Dr Odedeji enjoined students currently in National Diploma (ND) 1 and Higher National Diploma (HND) 1 to apply for the student loan to ease the financial burden of payment of the tuition fees off their parents, saying the repayment is only due after securing job on completion of academic programmes
The school according to him, has taken delivery of laboratory and workshop equipments worth millions of naira courtesy of Tertiary Education Trust Fund(TETFUND) for both the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Departments
He added that the equipments would be installed at the Skills Development Programmes Centre of the institution to provide the compulsory Information and Communication Technology ICT training for every student on campus and equip with additional skills in vocational trades under the National Skills Qualifications NSQ Framework
Earlier the new President of SUG, Prosper Oladele after being sworn-in along with other executive members, assured the student populace on campus of providing effective leadership that would not compromise their interest
The 39th leader in the history of MAPOLY student unionism therefore called for the support of fellow students to sustain the vibrant students movement on the campus
Other members of the new student union include Quadri Akinola, Vice President; Falola Aminat Oyindamola, General Secretary; Ajibola Sherif, Financial Secretary; Alaran Oyinkansola, Treasurer; Egbesola Ajayi John, Social Director; Ogunsola Oluwapelumi, Public Relations Officer; Okoro Christogonus, Sports Director and Ogunleye John Olanrewaju; Welfare Director.
The immediate past President of the union, Comrade Adeola Hezekiah Babatunde was full of appreciation for the management and students for the successful activities during his tenure which witnessed resuscitation of social and sporting activities on campus
The 38th president later honoured some distinguished individuals with the union's awards in recognition of their respective contributions to the students welfare on campus including a member of Federal House of Representative, Hon. Afolabi Moruff Afuape, a former Head of Department of Marketing in the institution
Similarly Director of Students Affairs Directorate, Dr Amos Kolawole lauded the leadership style of Hezekiah on campus, urging the new Exco of SUG led by Prosper to sustain the vibrancy and ensure cordial relationship
