Gov.Sanwo-Olu Extends 'Ounje Eko Food Discount Market' To Yabatech




Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State in collaboration with the management of Yaba College of Technology has opened 'Ounje Eko Food Discount Market' on the main campus of the seventy-seven (77) years old first tertiary institution in Nigeria.

Yaba College of Technology in partnership with the Lagos State Government is operating the Ounje Eko Food Discount Market with the aim of providing affordable food to the college stakeholders and immediate general public within the college community and her environs at twenty-five (25%) percent discount rate. 


The market, which is to run on every Friday of the week for six weeks at initial stage with a room for extension from Friday, September 20th to October 25th, 2024, will operate between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on the college campus.

At the opening ceremony, the Rector of the College, Dr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, represented by the Deputy Rector, Administration, Arc. ’Femi Lawal, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor Babajide SanwoOlu for approving the collaboration and extending the grace to the college community. 

He acknowledged and lauded the Lagos State Government’s efforts at ensuring foods are available at an affordable price for residents, noting that the initiative aligns with the College’s mission to contribute positively to her immediate community

"This initiative will ease the burden on our students and staff as well as the larger community, ensuring access to affordable food options in these challenging times,” said Arc Lawal.

The Ounje Eko Food Discount Market will take place on the College campus for six consecutive Fridays, offering food items at 25% discounted prices an effort by the Lagos State Government to tackle inflation and support residents during difficult economic conditions.

Also speaking,Mrs. Alice Ogunbiyi who was appointed by the Lagos State Government as Market Leader for the Market,eulogized the management of the college for cooperating with the State Government at embracing the  government's initiative at short notice.

She explained the modalities of the market operation and food items to be sold for the period earmarked for the market

She  added that the market would sell food items such as egg, gari, beans, rice, pepper and bread amongst others.

The Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Sarah Oketunji at the opening ceremony of the market praised the gesture of the Lagos State government and admonished the college community to uphold the modalities of the market operation and not to take the opportunity for granted.

She implored the governor to extend the market beyond the six weeks.
