Borno State Government has shutdown both public and private schools for two weeks , following the devastating flood that submerged several houses, particularly in Maiduguri , the State capital
Acting Director of Schools Services at the State Ministry of Education Science, Technology and Innovation, Grema Bulama announced the closure in a
statement, shortly after a visit to the Alo dam, a major water reservoir with sources from Lake Chad.
The Alo damn Bank have suffered leakages due to high rainfall leading to floods in most communities along riverine and flood-prone areas.
This is as the 2024/2025 academic session resumed on September 9, 2024.
The Secretary to the State Government Bukar Tijjani said that the closure was at the instance of Governor Babagana Zulum to determine the true state of the dam which has been a major source of water supply, as well as the cause of flood in past years to the State Capital.
Several houses had been submerged including the Palace of Shehu of Borno , the State Secretariat, schools , shops at the popular Monday Market, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Post Office
In a related development, the Bauchi state government confirmed that this year’s flooding had resulted in 24 deaths, and severely impacted 16 local government areas within the state.
The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajara Wanka noted that 163 people have been severely injured, and 122,330 households have been displaced.
The floods have also cut off 12 major roads, primarily in the northern parts of the state. Additionally, 60 culverts have been washed away, 52,035 houses have been destroyed, and 178 electric poles have collapsed. The floods have also resulted in the loss of 11,183 livestock
