All is set for the 2024 Lotus Bank 10km Road Race in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital with 6,000 registered runners ready to compete for top prizes on Saturday in the city
Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management Limited (NSML), organizers of the race, Chief Bukola Olopade addressing sports writers on Friday at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, ahead of the fourth edition of the competition, said that the registered runners included foreigners
Olopade, a former Sports Commissioner who was full of appreciation to Ogun State Government for providing the needed road infrastructure and other logistics support, expressed confidence that every had been put in place to ensure a successful race on Saturday for the runners
He described Abeokuta as one of most secured cities in Nigeria, assuring visitors of their safety, appreciating Lotus Bank for being the title sponsors and other co-sponsors of the race
Olopade revealed that hotels in the city had been fully booked, saying the race is contributing greatly to the local economy
He warned no athlete would be given medal without finishing the 10 km road race
The State Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr. Wasiu Isiaka lauded the Nilayo Sports Management Limited for holding the race in the city, to further create awareness for the forthcoming 2024 National Sports Festival to be hosted by the State in January
He pledged the State Government's support in ensuring a successful race on Saturday while assuring sports fans of the readiness of the State to stage a befitting National Sports Festival tagged "2024 Gateway Games"
The Commissioner expressed confidence that the facilities under construction at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Kuto would be ready ahead of the games in January
Project Manager of the race , Seyi Johnson said that the race tagged 'For Greatness', would flag-off at Iyana Oloke at 6am and will terminate at the Alake Palace, where the post race concert will be held.
Kenya's Peter Nwaniki is the current holder of the men's crown, while Shamila Kisirir also from Kenya is the reigning women champion.
