A 45-year-old man, Abayomi Ishola has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court Isabo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital for alleged impersonation of a lawyer and forgery of documents
Ishola, with no fixed address is facing a three count charge of impersonation, forgery and having in possession several faked signed deed of assignment.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to offence levelled on him when he appeared in court on Friday.
The prosecutor, Miss O.A lawal, Principal state counsel, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on sometimes between Jan 2022 to March 2024 at No 1 Yomi close Bode-Olude area in Abeokuta.
Lawal said the said the defendant falsely represented himself to be Barrister Seyi Olanrewaju by preparing documents using her personal details, falsified signature and a counterfeit seal without lawful authorization.
“The defendant also unlawfully prepared a deed of assignment for one Mr Alani Adegbite and Mr Samuel Wemimo using the complainant name, office address, forged signature and a counterfeit seal, knowing to be false documents.
“Also as at the time of the defendant arrest in his office, he found with several deed of assignment which were prepared by him using olanrewaju address forged signature and seal”she said.
The prosecuting counsel, said the defendant during his arrest made a confessional statement that he has been carrying out the act for over two years.
She said the defendant was caught through Samuel Wemimo who bought a land from Mr Alani Adegbite and and was given a deed of assignment for the land.
” Wemimo noticed the document given to him was not signed by a lawyer which made him returned it, on Adegbite returning the documents that was later signed by a lawyer to Wemimo, Wemimo went further to trace the address of the lawyer.
“On getting to the lawyer’s office Wemimo presented the document to the lawyer Olanrewaju who discovered that are signature and seal were forged and the document was not from her”she said.
Lawal, noted that the offences contravened Sections 484, 465 and 467 of the Criminal Law of Ogun 2006
The Chief Magistrate, B.O Ilo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum, and thereafter adjourned the case until Oct.14 for trial.
