Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed the comment which places an age limit on secondary school candidates writing examinations being conducted by The West African Examination Council and National Examination Council respectively
The Minister of State for Education, Yussuf Sununu who was speaking on Friday during the international literacy day ministerial briefing in Abuja, clarified that the comments credited to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman on the banning of candidates below 18 from writing both the West African Examination Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) was misconceived and misinterpreted by the public
According to him, the minister was speaking on the 18 years of entry age into the tertiary institutions which he said will begin in 2025.
"Nobody among the two of us stated anything about age foe WAEC, NECO examinations, that was not mentioned", he stated
“But people just implied to say that this is what it means. All we mentioned is about age of entry or admission into the university,” Sununu said.
Sununu also stated that exceptions may be made for underage students applying to federal higher institutions if they are considered exceptional, based on criteria currently being developed by the ministry.
Several stakeholders particularly parents and private school owners have condemned the directive reported in the media to have been given by the Federal Government to both WAEC and NECO to enforce the 18-year age requirements for candidates seeking to write the two examimations
