11th FASU Games: American University Cairo Emerges Overall Winner As LASU, UNILAG Finish In Top Three





It was a double joy for American University in Cairo, whose contingent emerged as the overall champions of the recently concluded 11th All Africa University Games in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial city and management won the hosting rights of the Federation of Africa University Sports FASU to stage the next edition of games in Egypt 


The university won a total of 82 medals including 46 Gold, 28 SILVER and 8 BRONZE, ahead of host, Lagos State University Ojo who finished second with a total of 84 medals comprising of 28 Gold, 30 Silver and 26 Bronze and co-host, University of Lagos Akoka with a total 98 medals including 25 Gold, 33 Silver and 40 Bronze to complete the top three spots on overall medals table


Coming a distant fourth  on the medals table is University of Ghana who won nine Gold ,nine Silver and 14 Bronze while University of Development Studies , Ghana completed the top five universities with seven Gold, two Silver and two Bronze among 22 universities across Africa countries on medals table 

LASU female football team fondly called Queens finished  as champions and the players were decorated on the eve of the closing ceremony on Sunday 


The Alternate-Chair, FASU Games, the Deputy Vice Chancellor  (Administration), LASU, Prof. Adenike Boyo, alongside some members of the organising committee decorated the triumphant young ladies at the Sports and Recreation Centre, main campus, Ojo, Lagos.

The ladies beat Universite De Labe from Guinea by a lone goal and drew with the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Angels, earning 4 points to place first, while Universite De Labe clinched the Silver with 3 points, winning a match and losing one,  and UNILAG took the Bronze medal, with just 1 point, drawing one match and losing one.

On Saturday, Team LASU won two more gold medals, in Basketball (male), beating Nile University, Abuja, the defending champion, NUGA, in the final by 73- 68 points  while the LASU babes took the gold ahead of UNILAG in the final of the Volleyball (female) by 3-1 set.






The university's male volleyball team picked silver in the final, but, in football, the LASU Trablazers failed to cart home the bronze in the 3rd place match as it lost to Federal University, Oye-Ekiti by 0-1.

During the closing ceremony held at Sports and Recreation Center on Ojo campus of LASU, both Vice Chancellors of LASU and UNILAG handed over the games torch to the representatives of the next host, American University in Cairo, Egypt
