Abiodun Seeks Ogun Assembly's Approval For A Bill To Boost Power Generation, Distribution, As Lawmakers Okay Revised LG Poll Guidelines


                



Governor Dapo Abiodun has asked for consideration of the Ogun State House of Assembly to approve a bill seeking legal framework to improve Electricity Generation, Transmission and Distribution within the State

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Oludaisi Elemide during plenary in the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, acknowledged the receipt of a correspondence from Governor  Abiodun, proposing a bill for a law to establish an Electricity Marker and Key Power Sector Bodies, Enforce Consumer Rights and Obligations and for other connected purposes

The sending of the bill, followed the Electricity Act 2023, which empowers State Governments to provide a comprehensive legal and institutional framework for the power sector in the areas of generation, transmission and distribution in their respective and states 

According to the letter which partly reads: "I am pleased to forward the above captioned bill through your good self, to the House of Assembly, for due consideration and passage into Law. The Bill, which was approved at the Executive Council Meeting held on the 1st of August 2024, is necessitated by the Passage of the Electricity Act 2023, which empowers States to provide a comprehensive legal and institutional framework for the power sector in the areas of generation, transmission, distribution, trading and enforcement of consumer rights and obligations amongst others".

Meanwhile the  State House of Assembly has approved a request by the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission's (OGSIEC) to grant the revised election guidelines, ahead of the November 16, 2024 councils' poll 

The request is in line with the provisions of Section 3(i)(i) and 5 of the the State Regulations Approval Law, 2020 

The approval followed the presentation of the report of the Committee of the Whole House by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Bolanle Ajayi, in respect of the request of the Commission, during a plenary on Tuesday presided over by the Speaker of the house,Elemide at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. 

The Deputy Whip, Hon. Tella Babatunde thereafter moved the motion for its adoption, seconded by Hon. Damilare Bello, and was unanimously supported by all the other lawmaker through a voice vote.

Consequently, the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, later moved the motion converting the Committee's recommendations into the House resolution, which was seconded by the Minority Leader, Lukmon Adeleye and supported by the Whole House, through a unanimous voice vote.

Earlier, the Speaker had acknowledged and read a letter from the Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission, Babatunde Osibodu, requesting the Assembly's approval for the revised guidelines in line with the State Regulations Approval Law, 2020.
