A don at the Department of Foreign Languages, Lagos State University Ojo, Dr.Timehin Saheed, has blamed poor parenting for disturbing rate of cyber crime in Nigeria, tasking Aminat International College, Abeokuta and other Muslim schools to lead the crusade of creating awareness on the danger of the crime and how to curb or reduce the cases in the country
The scholar who was a guest speaker at the 19th Valedictory Service and 24th of end of the session activities of the college held on Saturday in Gbonagun ,Obantoko area of Abeokuta in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, says most of the parents are not imparting the right values in their children or make themselves available to provide adequate guidance and protect their wards from being involved or victims of the cybercrime, which he described as a wide range of malicious activities conducted through digital channels
Timehin speaking on the theme of the 2024 Valedictory Service of AICA, "Navigating The Right Path Against Cyber-crime Intricacies " emphasized the need for parents on their own to be educated on the potential danger of the Internet and how to guide their children in using it safely, "This includes setting rules for Internet use, discussing the types of information that should be shared online and monitoring their children's online activities
On what part should schools play in protecting youths and children from cyber -crime , the said Aminat International College Abeokuta must take the lead in the crusade in mobilizing other Muslim schools in creating massive awareness through implementation of comprehensive digital literacy programme
"These programmes should cover topics such as online privacy, recognizing phishing attempts and the importance of strong words. Similarly, encouraging the use of safe browsing tools and privacy focused search engines can reduce the exposure of youths to harmful contents and cyber threats", he stated
"In summary, addressing Cyber-crime Intricacies involves a holistic strategy encompassing technical, legal, educational and ethical dimensions. By understanding the nature of cyber threats, implementing robust defences and fostering a culture of cyber security awareness, individuals and organizations can navigate this challenging landscape with confidence and resilience", he submitted
The Principal of the college, Alhaji Mikail Anifowose had earlier appreciated parents for their patronage, the supportive staff as well as teachers and graduating students for sustaining the college's traditions of moral and academic excellence, which saw the school winning several academic laurels through out the 2023/2024 academic session
He described the school performance in the last 2024 JAMB Unified Tertiary Institutions Matriculation Examination (UTME) as exceptional while admonishing the graduating students not to be deterred by whatever they see or hear but remain focus on their on their set academic goals

The principal was full of praises for the representative of the Proprietor, Alhaji Sheriff Yusuff who was represented by Alhaji Mutiu Yusuff and Management Committee members of the college led by Alhaji Abdur-Razzaq Abdul-Azeez for being able to give the needed guide while acknowledging the roles of Parents Teachers Association which according to him, has been persistently supporting the school programmes and giving out welfare package to the staff
Also speaking, Chairman of the event, Prof.Lateef Sanni represented by Prof.Sheriff Adewuyi commended the school for sustenance of academic excellence saying the school never compromised its zero tolerance for examination malpractices
The Overall Best Graduating Student, Abdul Faheemah Oluwateniola in her valedictory speech, said she alongside her classmates had learned the value of friendship, the importance of empathy and power of resilience as students of the college in the past six years
"We've grown not only in knowledge but also in character, becoming better version of ourselves with each passing day", she stated
"As we embark on the next chapter, let us carry with us the lessons we've learned and values we hold dear. Let us strive to be beacons of compassion, advocates of justice and champions of peace", she urged
The event was spiced up with presentation of prizes to outstanding students in appreciation of their exceptional academic performances including Abdul Faheemah Oluwateniola who emerged overall best among the 50 graduating students with 73.09 percent closely followed by Daud-Akinbo Mubarakah (72.83percent) and Adewuyi Ashraf (70.19 percent) in second and third positions respectively
In the Junior Secondary School Class three, Aminu Adam, Abdur-Rahman Hawaa and Ogunwale Deborah with 83.26 percent, 82.71 percent and 80.73 percent respectively to emerge as the best three among 38 students
There was cultural performances by the pupils of the school and chorography display amongst others
