President/Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University Ilishan-Remo in Ogun State, Prof. Ademola Tayo has called on the Federal Government to urgently consider review of electricity tariff for educational institutions in Nigeria, so as reduce the rising cost of running tertiary institutions in the country,as a result of disturbing rate of inflation
The Vice-Chancellor who made call on Sunday during the 22nd undergraduate and 13th postgraduate convocation ceremonies, lamented that the university spent N300million monthly on electricity to ensure provision of quality education for the students on campus
'"The significant surge resulting from reclassification of customers in Band A for Electricity tariff by authorities and consequential burden of meeting exorbitant monthly expenses. Despite this challenge we are resolute not to lower our standards but rather raised the bar of education"
"We plead with government to review the electricity tariff for educational institutions in Nigeria. Investing in education is crucial for Nigeria 's economic growth and development. We need policies that prioritize education funding and support universities in navigating these economic challenges", he stated
Babcock University according to him, remains the most subscribed private in Nigeria with a total of 3,223 students who took oath of allegiance at the 25th matriculation ceremony in April, this year including 58 international students from 19 different countries in Africa
"Our goal is to foster an inclusive and multicultural campus environment that enriches the educational experience for all students", he added
The Vice-Chancellor then urged the graduating students never to stop striving for excellence and use the power of knowledge acquired to change in the world
"You are the torchbearers of our university's legacy. As you step into the next phase of your lives, carry with you the values and lessons you have learned here ", he charged the graduands which included 2, 442 undergraduates with 148 who bagged Firstclsss degree , 174 with Master Degrees, and 160 PhD holders
The university also conferred honorary doctorate degree on two distinguished Nigerians, legal luminary , Chief Wole Olanipeku, SAN, and an astute Chartered banker with over thirty years in the industry Mrs Busola Onikepo Smith who were honoured with Doctor of Law and Administration Honoris Causa and Doctor of Strategic Leadership and Business Finance respectively
Onikepo Smith speaking on behalf of the both awardees, assured the university of continuous support to the Infrastructural development of the institution
