17 Students On Olowu Scholarship Scheme In Ogun, As Oba Matemilola Celebrates 2nd Anniversary Coronation, 60th Birthday





No fewer than seventeen students are now studying in various tertiary institutions across Nigeria while 75 percent of the 51 others registered for the 2024 JAMB-UTME recorded impressive performances ,under the scholarship initiative of Olowu Scholars Foundation 

The Olowu of Owu-Abeokuta kingdom, Oba (Prof.) Saka Adelola Matemilola who revealed this on Wednesday at his Oke-Agowu Palace during a press conference heralding activities marking the second anniversary Coronation and 60th birthday, says two of the students gained admission to Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State and Federal University of Oye Ekiti while fifteen (15) others gained admission to study at Owu Polytechnic, Wasinmi , Ogun State for the 2022/2023 academic session 

According to the monarch, 19 of those registered for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME conducted by The Joint Admission Matriculation Board JAMB, scored 200 and above, seven scored 250 and above, five of them scored above 300marks while 17 of them scored 150 and above 

The Olowu recalled that the foundation in 2022 after its formal launching in November, paid for both UTME and West African Senior School Certificate Examination  fees for 60 scholars from four schools including African Church Grammar School, Gateway Secondary School, Methodist High School and St Peter's College all in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital while 53 learners were enrolled for evening lessons preparatory to writing the both WASSCE and UTME for the 2022/2023 academic session 



Oba Matemilola stated that the foundation in collaboration with Solace Foundation and Sixth Sense Foundation embarked on Literacy Development projects to enhance reading, writing and speaking skills among school children's 

He stated that the discussion was ongoing with the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Ogun State branch to make use of  e-library facilities at Owu Community Library established within the palace, to train teachers 

The Olowu added that School Excursion Programme was introduced to broaden the knowledge base of secondary schools pupils beyond classroom teachings and enhance observational skills through real-time explanations of production process in addition to awareness created to encourage school children to register as members of Scouts Association and Girls Guide where they were exposed to community and social development activities while Solace Foundation launched a book to encourage reading culture among young children in Abeokuta 

Oba Matemilola who advocated for the return of Home Grown School Feeding initiative suspended by the Federal Government, said arrangement was made to ensure provision of free meal per day in some of the public schools in Abeokuta to encourage less priviledged parents to enroll their children in schools



The monarch also revealed that talented players discovered at the recently concluded "Olowu Football Competition in partnership with former Super Eagles Coach Bonfrere Jo, would be encouraged to combine sports with education through provision of scholarship to the players to further their education 

The second anniversary Coronation activities continue on Thursday with conferment of Chieftancy titles on nine distinguished sons and daughters of Owu Kingdom at the palace while symposium would hold on Friday at Auditorium of Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) by 2:30pm 

On 3rd of August, Saturday, it will be the second anniversary Coronation day by 10am at Oba Odeleye Park, Ori-Omi while grand-finale for the 60th birthday holds at OOPL  Auditorium for invited guests on Sunday August by 12noon
