Ogun NLC Moves Against Casualization, Other Inhuman Working Conditions In Private Companies

Ogun State Council of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has taken a serious step to reduce cases of casualization  and other forms of inhuman working conditions being experienced by average workers in private companies, especially those being managed by foreigners 

The State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Hameed Benco-Ademola revealed this on Tuesday in Abeokuta to newsmen on the sideline of a -day Sensitization/Induction and seminar organized by the union for its executive committees in the 20 Local Governments in the state 

He stated that a Private Sector Membership Committee had been set up by the State Executive Council to handle the issues of casualization and other inhuman treatment of workers in private companies, by ensuring that the all  affected companies are properly registered with one of the over 50 affiliates trade unions with NLC

Benco-Ademola explained that the essence of the seminar was to prepare the leadership of NLC at local government level on how to handle various labour related issues, by ensuring that workers in the various companies in the state are properly unionized to enable leadership of NLC at state level to negotiate good working conditions for these workers and ensure industrial harmony with their employers 

"We've constituted a Private Sector Membership Drive Committee of which this seminar will avail us of the names of the companies and unionization status of such companies in each of the 20Local Government Areas in the state. Our target is to ensure that all workers in the private companies are well taken care of and companies are registered under any of the affiliates of NLC for the purpose of collective bargaining and industrial harmony to be continued while also ensuring that the worrisome cases of employment and job security between public and private sector are reduced to bearest minimum", he stated

The State NLC Chairman urged leadership of the union in various local governments to always engage workers in private companies, particularly those being managed by foreigners, to know their complaints as regards their working conditions and report such situations to the state council for immediate appropriate action to be taken against of the companies

"We've set up this committee to deal with the issues of de-humanization of workers in various companies and reduce to bearest minimum. Once we get these companies enlisted into different affiliates of NLC, definitely we will be able to negotiate for better condition of service for these workers and ensure that these conditions are well spelt out , because most of these companies are not having good condition of service for their workers", he stressed 

Benco-Ademola expressed confidence  that the union at the end of the induction and seminar, would achieve between 70 and 75 percent of its target on the issue of proper registration of private companies, to enable NLC to properly address the issues of casualization and other forms of inhuman treatment being experienced by Nigerians working in private companies
