Athletes from schools in Delta State and host Ogun State dominated some of the track and field events at the recently concluded Nigeria School Sports Federation NSSF trial held at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, to select athletes that will represent the country at the forthcoming World School Athletics Championship in Turkey
Team-Ogun trio of Olude Kehinde (Yewa College), Olabayo Ore-oluwa( Methodist Comprehensive College, Sagamu) and Joel Kidness (Remo Secondary School, Sagamu) won gold, silver and bronze respectively in girls under 18 , 3,000 metres while Usman Aminulahi (Kano State) won the boys category of the 3,000 metres
In the under 12 boys high jump event Bello Yusuff (Segun Odegbami International School, Wasinmi, Ogun State) won, beating Micheal from Rivers State and James Odebami from Oyo State to second and third place respectively while Raimot of Babtist Girls College, Abeokuta, Ogun State won the girls under 12 high jump
However, it was a trio of Team-Delta, Lucky Anthony, Melvin and Omole who finished in first, second and third place respectively in the under 15 boys high jump while the dou of twins sisters Frances and Franca Ajagbawa (College Of Commerce , Warri, Delta State) finished in the first and second positions respectively in the girls under 18 tripple jump event
Alozie Chukwuemeka, a Senior Secondary School 3 class student of Federal Government College, Okigwe in Imo State won the boys under 18 high jump event
President of NSSF, Olabisi Joseph who commended the Ogun State Government for the successful hosting of the national trial , said that the selected athletes would be camped early enough to prepare them ahead of the World School Athletics Championship in Turkey later in the year between June and July
Secretary General of Nigeria Olympic Committee, Tunde Popoola and top officials from the Federal Ministry of Sports witnessed the two-day event
