The Anti-Smuggling Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service in Ogun 1 Area Command have recorded seizures of 25,906bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each loaded in 43 trailer loads just as the Command puts the total Duty Paid Value of total goods of goods seized between January and June, 2022 at N3.4billion
The Area Controller, Compt Bamidele Makinde who revealed this during a news conference in Abeokuta, expressed concern over the huge seizures of imported rice into the country
"This huge quantity, if allowed into Nigerian market would be disastrous to the Federal Government's policy on local rice production and the economy of the Nation", he decried
He further disclosed that command during the period under review realized revenue totally N29.9million (N29,940,146.50) from import duties aution and the sales of 11,645 kegs of 25litres of Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) seized from smugglers in nine tanker loads of fuel
The Area Controller described the performance of revenue generated as a significance increase over the N15.2million (N15,261,074.00) realized as revenue during the same period in 2021 while that total DPV of goods seized estimated at N3.4billion was 400percent higher than the N834.7million (N834,765,273.00) recorded as DPV for corresponding period last year
Makinde listed some of the seizures made in the last six months to include 1,433 cartons of frozen poultry products, 72 units of foreign used Vehicles conveyed in Marcopolo bus, 289 cartons of Tomato paste as well as various second hand clothes in 34 bales, 113 sacks and 36 Ghana Must Go Bags
He also conducted newsmen round illicit drugs seized which included 1,400 packets and 2,250 sachets of Tramadol, 168 packets of Codeine, 258 sacks and 661wraps of Cannabis Sativa amongst other seizures
The Controller added that the Command was able to make these achievements due to the deployment of intelligence in all the operations across the state and synergy with other security service agencies while carrying out our statutory
its statutory function of enforcing compliance in line with government fiscal policy
He also attributed the success to Improved motivation of officers by the NCS Management saying the
Command recently was provided with accommodation courtesy the Controller General of Customs,
Col Hameed Ibrahim Ali (rtd), his management team
Makinde equally appreciated the support of
traditional rulers in various communities in the State.
"We shall strengthen the Customs-Community Relations and
Improve on discipline and total dedication to duty by officers", he assured
"The Command will continue to dialogue, engage, sensitize and educate the community leaders and traditional rulers for their continuous collaborative in combating smuggling and urged them to educate their subjects on the danger of smuggling", he stated
