Derinsola Abiola, daughter of the late business mogul and acclaimed winner of June 12,1993 presidential election,Chief MKO Abiola, has formally launched her foundation with empowerment of 110 market women in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital
Presenting N20,000 cash powered by Derinsola Abiola Foundation to each of the selected beneficiaries across major markets in the city on Thursday, she said the purpose of the fund was to help them start sustainable businesses or grow the existing businesses
Derinsola explained that the foundation was established to commemorate her birthday celebrated on the 14th of November,2021 and give back to the society by empowering women in small businesses
She added that the foundation decided to empower market women because of her strong belief in human capacity development to compliment government effort at creating enabling environment for business to thrive
"It was my birthday on the 14th of November and weeks before I decided
to commemorate it. I'm certain we all know there has been a lot of interest in women empowerment in the recent times. This is because studies have shown that when empowered, women invest in home and work hard to develop others, I decided that my foundation's very first activity would be to launch a support fund for women drawn from our markets and across communities", Derinsola stated
"Small and medium enterprises play a vital role in any economy and I consider it a duty to give as much as support as possible to many people who require it", she added
Also speaking Chairman of All Progressives Congress APC in Abeokuta North Local Government Area, Alhaja Faidat Akintunde Sarumi lauded the initiative of the promoter of the foundation , to kick its activities with empowerment of market women in Abeokuta
She urged the beneficiaries to ensure judious use of the support fund to boost their small businesses while calling on them to support Derinsola when ever she decided to declare her ambition in politics
Similarly the party's Chairman in Abeokuta South Local Government Area,Adetunji Fagbenro was full of praises for Derinsola whom he described as replica of her father who was a great philanthropist, encouragingly her to sustain the gesture for more traders to benefit from the activities of the foundation
Other top leaders in the party, particularly in Abeokuta North showered encomium on Derinsola for setting up the foundation to assist market women to sustain their businesses
