Oladimeji Shotunde, the overall best graduating student of the Lagos State University,(LASU),Ojoo has become a proud owner of a two bedroom burgalow and N2million richer, courtesy of the Ogun State Government who celebrated him and 26 others for winning academic laurels for the state
Shotunde, an indigene of the state broke a 37 year-old academic record of the university with commutative grade of 4.9, to emerge the best graduate of his set
Also Miss Faith Odunsi,a Global Open Mathematics Tournament winner, who is a student of The Ambassadors College, Ota was recognized for her academic exploit, with a formal launching of a Special Endowment Fund to support her educational pursuit with a N5million take-off grant and personal laptop
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the rewards on Thursday in Abeokuta,the Ogun State capital,during a maiden edition of Ogun Academic Laureates Award, an event organized by the State Government, to appreciate awardees and indigenes who did the state proud in various Competitions in the education sector at both national and global levels
The highly elated Abiodun described education sector as the biggest Industry of the state which must be sustained by his administration in terms of continous Investment in infrastructural and human capital development
He explained that the state of emergency declared in the education sector by the present administration was deliberate, to restore the state's lost glory which has started yielding the desired results as reflected in various awards by students and teachers in the state
According to Abiodun, over 25,000 furniture provided for pupils in public schools in addition to over 800 schools renovated while the monthly running cost to the schools increased to N120,000 as well as approval of N200million Intervention fund for the state owned tertiary Institutions in the last 23months
The Governor particularly showered praises on the management of the Ogun State Institute Of Technology, Igbesa led by its Rector, Dr.(Mrs) Olufunke Akinkurolere for making the state proud, as the winner of the 2019 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board(JAMB) most compliance Institution in Nigeria
His words,"We are Best State and we have overall best students for both male and female students in JETS. We are the Champion! The icing on the cake is that of Miss Odunsi Faith, the global winner of Open Mathematics Tournament (GOMT). The story of the deluge of awards we are witnessing today cannot be completed without the teachers and school administrators who are also champions in their own rights. It is not a flash in the pan to have Award of Excellence in leadership and productivity won by five schools in the State; 2020 African Writer’s Award; and, 2020 President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award. I am proud of you all'".
"Looking at these young men and women of Ogun State, I find in them not just a reward for our commitment, but indeed, an encouragement to do more. We have continued to dedicate and demonstrate our commitment to the successful implementation of the “Building our Future Together” Agenda. These great ambassadors of our dear State have given us assurances of a greater future. By these achievements, they are telling us that the future we are building would be handed over to dedicated hands and intelligent minds". The governor stated.
He assured that the state under his watch would continue to put measures in place towards providing quality education necessary for the development of the state. just as he charged our dear teachers that, as important stakeholders, you should continue to discharge your professional duties creditably beyond the new demands of COVID-19.
Abiodun, however, commended the teachers in the state for their commitment and professionalism, saying "without doubt, the successes we are witnessing might not have been possible without their special contributions".

Abiodun lauded the State Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu and other top officials of the ministry recorded so far in the education sector in the country, pledging to continue give priority to the sector to sustain the state's leadership
Other awardees honoured at the event included winners of National Mathematics Olympiad Miss Fatimoh Tijani of Abeokuta Grammar School who clinched the top position as well as Miss Treasure Oguntade of Molusi College, Ijebu-Igbo, and Miss Jesutofunmi Okusanya of Adeola Odutola College, Ijebu-Ode who finished in the joint second position
Also the state teams that won the Junior Engineers Technicians and Scientists (JETS) National Competition back to back for 2020 and 2021 editions were honoured by the government
The reigning JETS Champions include, the duo of Mofiyinfoluwa Akinola and Oluwatoba Olu Faleye of The Ambassadors College Ota, while Qudus Temitope Omoniyi of Scholars Universal Secondary School, Ota who came third and Peace Fadero of Mayflower Junior Secondary School, came second in the junior category of the Competition.
The 2020 JETS Champions include Miss Aishat Kareem of Aminat International College, Gbonogun, Abeokuta, Itunu Ojesola of Federal College of Education Model Secondary School, Osiele Abeokuta, Oluwapamilerin Sobiyede of Abeokuta Grammar School as well as the duo of Abimbola Akindele and Akinfoluhan Akinleye of The Ambassadors College Ota.
Others appreciated at the ceremony, are winners of teachers awards, Olasunkanmi Opeifa , a native of Igbogila in the state and a teacher at Government Day Secondary School,Haru, Abuja who emerged as among the top ten finalists at the 2020 Global Teacher Prize, Mrs Oluyemisi Oladejo of Oronna High School, Ilaro who clinched the 2020 Africa Writers' Award, the couple of Olalekan Ademola Adeeko of the Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta who won the 2020 African Union Continental Teacher Award and Mrs. Folukemi Asabi Adeeko of Patterson Memorial Baptist School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta who finished as the second Runner Up at the 2020 Maltina Teacher of the Year Award
Three indigenes Yusuf Usman Olalekan, Babalola Olawale Atanda and Oyenekan Victor Taiwo who bagged the National Youths Service Corps(NYSC) Presidential Award, were equally recognized for doing the state proud while winners of the SG Holdings Foundation Annual Secondary Schools Quiz Competition, Wisdom Ugota of Iganmode Grammar School,Ota, Samuel Oluwatobi Ojo of Aps Scholars Universal College, Ota and Henry Ayomide Fowobaje of The Ambassadors College Ota also received accolades with plaques for their academic feats
Winners at the junior category of the quiz competition, including Olufemi Ositade of The Ambassadors College, Ota, Victor Chinedu Maduvere of Apt Scholars Universal College,Ota and Enoch Afenisumen of Great Grace Science School, Owode-Yewa who finished in the top three at the competition were recognized
In his remark, the former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola, noted that Ogun has been at the forefront of education advancement in the country and charged the laureates to do more to make Ogun proud.
He commended the Dapo Abiodun-led administration for organising the event to celebrate the Ogun state finest, noting such celebration would serve as motivation to other students and teachers.
In their respective goodwill messages through virtual, the Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, the Director, National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, Professor Adewale Solarin, the Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Professor Isiaq Oloyede and the former Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Olufemi Bamiro, lauded the state government for giving education a top priority, which has culminated in achievements recorded by the students and teachers.
Also the State Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT), Comrade Samson Oyelere, the State Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Comrade Akeem Lasisi and that of Association of Conference of Principals, Dr(Mrs) Ayodele Womiloju and leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students in the state lauded the Abiodun's administration for its Investment in education and the initiative to appreciate the awardees for their efforts
